Palestine and Israel

During our trip to Israel and Palestine we make for Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron and Jericho, for the heart of the culture and history of many thousands of years, woven into a contemporary mix of conflict and hope, hospitality and pride, and for a lot of heartfelt warmth and committed human souls. We have to look behind narratives and news stories about the conflict in the Middle East everyone has heard about, when we meet with the people for whom the settlement, occupation, conflict and culture are everyday.

Jerusalem

A divided city with a conflicted past and present

You can feel the presence of history as soon as you arrive in Jerusalem. Everywhere in the winding streets of the old district, it is teeming with sensory impressions from glittering jewellery stalls, fragrant spice stands that mingle with the scent of freshly made coffee and the sound of always ongoing conversation at the hookah cafés. We are staying right there in the old Middle East, where the buildings can be dated many millennia back, while the story still feels quite contemporary. With a freshly squeezed granate juice in one hand and a falafel pita in the other, we explore the city, which is the focal point of one of the longest conflicts and visits and talks with local Israelis and Palestinians who work to solve it in their own way.

The West bank

Amidst settlements, bedouins and resilient public spirit

In the beautiful hilly landscape just on the other side of Jerusalem is Bethlehem. We drive through checkpoints and along the wall, which, with its street art and altitude, is a monument to the unresolved conflict. We will live locally with local volunteers, we will explore the beautiful nature of Palestine and help preserve it, while we learn more about everyday life as a resident in an occupied area.

We move further around the West Bank and visit Jericho, Ramallah and Hebron. We will be taking a trip with former Israeli soldiers from the organisation Breaking the Silence to Hebron, the city where the Tomb of the Patriarchs is located. The city centre is a manifestation of the settler policy and in the hills around the city, we meet the Palestinian shepherds who are struggling with being relocated from their country.

Louise Mortensen

Louise is an outdoors entusiast, adventurer and dedicated climate advocate. She has a degree in Sociology , specialized with a masters degree in Human Security, focused on community building and young people's access to democracy
