Long travels
Combine your folk high school stay with a long travel with volunteer work in Japan
At Nordfyns Folk High School, you have the opportunity to extend your folk high school stay with a long trip to Japan involving voluntary work, where you, along with your folk high school friends, will have a unique journey with experiences that a typical tourist trip cannot provide. The journey starts when the folk high school stay ends, and during the folk high school stay, you will prepare together for the trip and the voluntary work in Japan.
You will be staying in Hirota in northern Japan, where you and the others on the journey will be affiliated as volunteers with our local partner, SET. Together with other young people from Japan, you will reside at SET and engage as volunteers in their community-building projects in the local area. During your time in Japan, you will become part of the daily life in Hirota. You have significant influence over which projects you wish to engage in, and you will also have ample opportunity to travel around and see other parts of Japan.
Before departure, during your folk high school stay, you will prepare for the journey and voluntary work together as one of your elective courses. In this course, you will learn about cultural encounters, Japanese culture and history, sustainable volunteer work, and plan which projects you will engage in with our partner, so you are well-prepared for the journey and the voluntary work.
The travel
Get close to the everyday life and culture of Japan
In 2011, Japan's northwest coast was struck by a devastating tsunami. Two days later, young people from Tokyo founded the organization SET in the small fishing village of Hirota. The organization's goal was to develop and support the rebuilding of the local community. The work continues to focus on developing solutions for community building and social sustainability that can spread throughout the Japanese society. The philosophy behind SET's work is rooted in the same principles as the folk high school concept in Denmark: a space for change and a place where young people can pursue their passions. As a volunteer with SET, you live in a 'collective' with Japanese students from SET's Change Makers' College and become involved in the community building projects they undertake in the local area.
As a volunteer in Japan, you'll get close to both the local population in the town of Hirota, where you'll be living, and young university students from the bigger cities who have come north to take a break from the hustle of city life. You'll become part of local life, helping with tasks like fishing or organizing events in the local community café. How much project work you'll be involved in largely depends on your own attitude and initiative. The more you say yes to, the more you'll experience and grow. In addition to encountering a new culture, be prepared to explain yourself and communicate through gestures and body language, as not everyone in the town speaks English. However, you can expect that key individuals around you do, and there will always be a helpful contact person from SET, our partner, who can speak English. One thing is certain - you'll have an unforgettable journey that will challenge you and broaden your horizons, where you'll become part of a new culture and daily life, experiencing things that a regular tourist trip wouldn't provide.
My name is Malthe, and in May-June 2023, I lived in Hirota with SET, where I did volunteer work and was involved in their community projects. On May 28th, not long after I arrived in Hirota, I went on a trip about two hours north of Hirota to the small town of Hanamaki, together with my contact person Wataru and my roommate Kanna. That day, there was a small festival at the foot of a beautiful Shinto temple in the forest. It was humid and drizzling a bit that day, but it also added to the atmosphere. There were small stalls set up where you could buy food and drinks, as well as clothing, crafts, and other items. Shortly after arriving, I started to hear drums and flutes getting closer and closer, and suddenly I found myself in the middle of a procession of people in traditional costumes, representing spirits, and others dancing along. Some started following the procession accompanied by small bells and soap bubbles. The procession was heading up to the temple building itself, where there was a brief stop, and then the party continued to a small stage nearby, not far from a waterfall. Some other spectators began to dance along, and it was overall a very free and relaxed way to celebrate the day. When the procession was almost finished, the three of us went up to the temple and found a small vending machine where you could pull a piece of paper that supposedly could predict your future. I don't remember exactly what mine said, but I remember it being generally positive. We washed down the experiences in Hanamaki with a cup of coffee and crepes (which are surprisingly common in Japan). On the way home, we passed through another small town where we had ramen for dinner. All the sensory impressions from the day are still with me, and it became a day I'll probably never forget!

When you land, our partner will be ready to welcome you and the others. During the first week, you will spend time together just settling in, getting a feel for the culture, and gaining a closer insight into our partner's general work. Throughout your stay as a volunteer, you will have a contact person at the partner organization, but you will also have a contact person (teacher) at the folk high school, whom you are always welcome to call.

Going to folk high school gave me the opportunity to stop up, listen to my heart, and discover that to me, joy is when I get to do things in my own pace. I hope that future students are ready to enjoy the present moment and the closeness in the conversations that you will have both with your new friends and yourself. -Azusa Kawaguchi
